What a perfectly curated playlist can do: almost 20k words on this current draft (and counting) after months of drought.
The right music is vital to my process. It can keep me immersed in a scene or deep in a character’s head no matter where I am — the school pickup line, the grocery store, the post office counter, in the shower, at the kitchen sink. Most of these words were typed madly on my iPhone when I snatched a moment for myself, then transferred to the full manuscript after the kiddo was asleep.
The right music means I don’t have to have my butt in the chair to keep working. No matter where I am, I can be galloping across Teluthian soil with Edmund and Arden, urban exploring with Ren and Hari, and even hanging out in the Mustang’s backseat with Alex and Jensen. (!!)
Music pulls the emotion out of me. When I write, I lead with emotion. Mood. Color. My goal is to pass it on and recreate it inside you. What an incredible feat of the Writer: to capture abstract emotions within themselves, gather and transform them into words, then magically, those words morph back into emotions within each reader.
Man, I love my job.
